Our purpose is the study, preservation, and sharing of the records of the settlements of Westmoreland County. Our interest is not just the political and military history, but the lives and families of those who have made Westmoreland County their home.

The Baltzer Meyer Historical Society was incorporated in 1995. We own two buildings, both having great historical value; Harrold #8, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1881, and the Old Zion Lutheran Church, built in 1884. We have been renovating the schoolhouse since 1996. The school is open as a fully restored one-room schoolhouse that can be accessed upon appointment. Hempfield. We plan on restoring it to function as a museum, a place for contemporary students to peek into the past and visualize how education has changed over the years.

The Old Zion Church has become our headquarters. Here is housed the Paul Miller Ruff genealogical library and history center containing over 10,000 books and booklets on family and local history. Harrold Hall social room, and our publishing and society offices. We are dedicated to preserving the local history and educating others about this area that much of the country can call the home of their ancestors.

Public tours of the library upon appointment. Please see our website for schedule and contact details.
