If your Scouts are looking for a fun experience as well as a merit badge, the Wilderness Voyageurs Boy Scout Fly Fishing Merit Badge Program is the way to go.

Join us in Ohiopyle, where we are surrounded by the Laurel Highland’s fly-fishing paradise. A short cast out the back door will land in the Youghiogheny River, and a long cast out the front door will land in Meadow Run. Within the boundaries of Ohiopyle State Park, you can choose from more than 25 miles of fishable water. Rainbow, Brown and Brook Trout or Smallmouth Bass; you decide what fish you are chasing for the day.

Location: Youghiogheny River, Meadow Run, Ohiopyle, PA

We’re starting from the very beginning! After a brief introduction to fishing terminology and bug life, we will head out for some casting practice, then learn some basic knots and fly techniques. We’ll then take off for the banks of the Youghiogheny River to fish. Throughout the afternoon you will work on understanding currents and where fish are feeding.

Mornings are for bugs, we will search around and discover the bugs that are hatching and the bugs the fish are eating. This leads us straight to fishing strategy and fish behavior. Then it’s time to break out the rods again, and we’ll work on improving the accuracy of casts, more difficult knots and fly selection.

All merit badge requirements will be met except for the cleaning and cooking of fish. We practice a catch and release ethic during all of our trips and clinics.

Attend as a unit or individually, minimum 12 years of age to participate.

Wilderness Voyageurs will provide all necessary fishing equipment: fly rods, tippet, fly line, flies, instructors, and lunch.

You provide a great attitude and desire to learn, also bring a pair of old tennis shoes for wading in the water, and pack wool socks for keeping your feet a comfortable temperature. To reserve your spot please visit the event website or call the number provided.
