Spanning Westmoreland, Somerset, and Fayette counties, Forbes State Forest encompasses more than 60,000 acres of land within the Laurel Highlands– and continues to grow. Forbes contains many unique natural features, such as Roaring Run Natural Area, Quebec Run Wild Area, and Mt. Davis Natural Area, the highest point in Pennsylvania. Other notable highlights of Forbes include Blue Hole, Wolf Rocks, Beam Rocks, Spruce Flats Bog, and the Wharton Furnace.


Forbes State Forest also boasts numerous outdoor recreational opportunities, with over 300 miles of multi-use trails. Popular outdoor recreation activities include: backpacking, hiking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

    6 motorized campsites are available from April 2 to the last day of regular rifle deer season; camping permits are required. Primitive camping – backpack-style; permit required only if staying more than one night in same location.
