Visit the spectacular Amish countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Charming specialty shops, wineries, delicious cuisine, locally made cheese, antiques, Amish-made furniture, and pottery. Located in Northern Indiana County, Smicksburg was founded in May of 1827 by Reverend J. George Schmick. Reverend Schmick was a Lutheran minister who purchased land from Charles Coleman. Perhaps you have heard locals refer to Smicksburg as "Schmicksburg". Now you know why! Smicksburg is the home to a large Amish population which has grown to over 800 settlers since 1961. The Amish pursue a simpler lifestyle, operating farms and other businesses in ways that have changed in the past century. Amish families and communities maintain a more primitive lifestyle than the surrounding culture. As you drive through the area, take notice of the fields being farmed with horses, and primitive tools. Continue on and you will also see small, white schoolhouses where young children play outside. You will also notice the beautiful countryside with rolling hills and gorgeous scenery. The people are hospitable and wave as you go by, but please be careful to respect their lifestyle. Please don't take pictures of the Amish folk. Drive slowly through the area being courteous to Amish traveling in horse-drawn buggies, as they share the roads with vehicles. Aside from the Amish presence in the town, visitors can enjoy over 20 specialty shops offering country crafts, quilts, furniture, antiques, and foods. Listed under the attractions section of our site, you will find a list of shops and the many things they offer to our town.
