The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, Places and People: Nora and Stuart Thompson. Featuring nearly 100 works by the Westmoreland County husband and wife, the exhibition opens August 19 and will remain on view through November 6.

The Museum will celebrate the exhibition at an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 20. The reception is open to the public free of charge, though reservations are requested by August 17. For reservations or additional information, please call the Museum at (724) 238-6015.

Places and People offers 45 acrylic paintings and graphite and colored pencil drawings by Nora Thompson and 32 oil on canvas paintings and 19 clay works created by Stuart Thompson. The styles of the two artists are quite different. Nora’s illustration-based work is often humorous by intent, presenting characters sometimes whimsical and sometimes lightly worrisome. Stuart’s work, by contrast, is straightforwardly narrative, intending to present slices of common scenes – largely of an outdoor nature – in the realistic genre of painting.

Nora Thompson is an illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist who has been illustrating professionally since 1991. Her mediums include acrylics, graphite, colored pencil and digital, all on wood, board or paper, and her styles range from figurative fine art to playful children’s illustrations. The exhibition features portraits of characters she created called The Rots, which were included in the book, Twisted: Tales to Rot Your Brain Vol. 1, and have been compared to the works of Edward Gorey, Charles Addams and Tim Burton. She holds the position of Illustration Coordinator for the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and is a life member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators.

Stuart Thompson is Professor of Art Emeritus at Seton Hill University. When not in the studio, he can usually be found outdoors, road biking, hiking or doing trail maintenance for the Laurel Highlands Trail, where he is a DCNR-sponsored “Ridge Runner.” He has a B.S. from Edinboro University and M.S. and Ph.D. from Penn State University, all in the field of art education. Thompson taught art at the high school and university level for 37 years. He is a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy, having spent 23 years with the Naval Reserve. He holds two Vietnam Service Medals and the Republic of Vietnam Unit Citation.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Ligonier Valley is located at One Boucher Lane and Route 711 South in Ligonier. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. weekends. The Museum is a handicapped-accessible facility and is open to the public free of charge.
