The Greater Monessen Historical Society will hold their annual Founders Day of Living History on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 11 AM until 5 PM, at Monessen City Park, 1918 Grand Blvd. The festival is a tribute to Monessen Founder, Colonel James Martinus Schoonmaker, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his services during the Civil War and the hero of the Third Battle of Winchester. Re-enactors from the 11th P.V.I. Company K, Inc. and the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry Company F will set up authentic Civil War camps to showcase a living history view of camp life during the War of the Rebellion.
The festival will include food vendors, booths, local authors, displays and family fun, along with great photo opportunities.
View displays of Civil War relics, cooking demonstrations over open fires, fife music, demonstrations of encampment, soldier life, their equipment, tents and uniforms, as well as children’s activities.
Living History Schedule for August 13:
Soldier drills: 11 AM, 1 PM, 3 PM, include inspection of arms, loading in 9 times, firing by company, file and rank.
Children’s activities: Immediately following Soldier Drills will include drilling with the soldiers using wooden guns, demonstrating the accuracy of Civil War bullets using round and spherical balls, old time games and Victorian dress up for photos. Don’t forget your camera. The Civil War re-enactors will only be at the Park on Saturday, so don’t miss the opportunity! A rock climbing wall provided by the Greensburg National Guard unit will also be new this year.
Wine in the Woods Event is a new addition to Founders Day this year! On Saturday from 11-7, and on Sunday from 12-6, Christian W. Klay Winery, of Chalkhill, and Plum Run Winery, Inc., of Brownsville, will be on hand for sampling of local wines. A donation of $5 will be charged, and visitors will be issued a bracelet after being carded to verify age. The Wine Event will be held in the walking track area on both days.
A separate and independent “Back to School Bash” will be held on Saturday, August 13, near the Amphitheatre by the Right Way to Go, Inc., which will be providing school supplies to area children.
