Register now for the 15th annual March for Parks event, to be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017! Once again, the Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board will host three Marches at Twin Lakes Park in Greensburg, Cedar Creek Park in Belle Vernon, and at the Murrysville SportZone along the Turtle Creek Extension of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail.
What is the March for Parks? The March is a fun event to raise funds for new park and trail projects in Westmoreland County. We completed a Master Plan for Cedar Creek Park and are moving forward on Phase I improvements in 2017, which will include a four-section dog park, parking upgrades, and preparation for a destination playground. At Mammoth, we are preparing for upgrades to the Giant Slide, a Frisbee golf course, and renovations of our tennis and dek hockey courts. In Murrysville, we are preparing for construction of 5.9 miles of the Turtle Creek Extension of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail from Murrysville to Trafford. There are bridge renovations to fund as well as the planning and engineering for the remaining section of trail. At Northmoreland, we are working on BMX facility improvements, and pavilion and restroom upgrades. Of course we are always working to replace and improve our play and picnic areas, restroom facilities, parking, roads, and other support facilities in all our parks. Income from the March for Parks and the great grass roots support it has generated has enabled us to complete a number of facilities across the County!
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. All Marches will start at 10:30 a.m. and end around noon. Marchers will collect monetary donations prior to the event and turn in their money on site. Dogs can also register for the March for Parks at all three locations! Those marchers or dogs who collect $25 or more will receive a t-shirt or doggie bandana. Marchers who collect over $150 or more will receive a gift card – the more you raise, the more the gift card will be worth!
Walkers and runners may participate as individuals or teams. Any group of three or more people can be a team. Organize your friends and family, school, place of worship, company or community organization. We will honor the top fundraising teams at each March, as well as the top ten teams from all three Marches. Even if you prefer not to march, there will be lots of fun activities like tasty food, raffles, music, awards and more at each site!
