ABOUT THE ARTIST
Johno Prascak loves Pittsburgh. So much so, that he infuses a bit of Pittsburgh into every painting he creates. Johno pioneered the technique of mixing Monongahela River sand into his acrylic enamel paints to create a daring and coarse texture for his work. His unflinching use of color and bold stroke is the stuff his paintings are made of. Johno and Pittsburgh can both lay claim to persevering despite excessive challenges and obstacles, the definition of true grit. At age 23, after a decade of suffering with life threatening Ulcerative Colitis, Johno underwent a complicated surgery that saved his life. Hearing his family’s priest administering last rights provided the motivation to not just survive, but to live a meaningful life. It was during his long recovery that he became interested in and studied art. He drew inspiration from the old masters and began painting as a form of therapy. It wasn’t long before he had his first art exhibition, the National Aviary's Wings & Wildlife Show, in 1988. One particular commission sent him to Megjugorje, Yugoslavia. Here, he was challenged to transfer onto canvas his impressions of the tiny village where sightings of the Blessed Mother had occurred. With deep feeling, Johno painted the pilgrims, many of whom travelled from around the world, to convene for prayer. “Occasionally, sand collected by a client is incorporated into a painting. When a client participates in the creation of their commission, it forms a great, gritty bond,” says Johno. For more information on the artist, please visit johnosart.com. His solo show, Bold Strokes, will be displayed in the Nemacolin Galleries from July 12 - October 4, 2016.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
“No matter the subject, my work can always be described as lively, bold and colorful. The collection assembled for Bold Strokes focuses on nature, urban settings and the abstract. Life, history and the natural world serve as my inspiration; as does my hometown of Pittsburgh. Here, my family roots run deep and it’s thrilling to live my life in a city that’s big and small at the same time. My medium of choice is Enamel paints mixed with sand from the Monongahela River. I discovered this unconventional mixture while using art as therapy during an arduous recuperation from surgery. These materials were easily available to me during that time. I apply many layers of paint incorporating the sand directly on to the canvas using brushes and drips resulting in a unique texture with vibrancy and depth. As I reflect on my life, it’s my decade-long struggle with Ulcerative Colitis that impacted me most. Through surgery, I was given a second chance. I found my path through art. I’m a believer in "giving back," and using my art, I’ve been able to work with numerous charities and fundraisers. My hope is when people view my paintings, they find a smile.” -Johno Prascak
