The sporting clays tournament is one of several events planned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the “9 For 9” Quecreek mine rescue. From July 24-28, 2002, millions worldwide watched and waited as rescuers worked around the clock to save nine men trapped in the flooded Quecreek mine in Jefferson Township, Somerset County. For 77 hours, rescuers faced set back after set back as they raced to bring the nine miners home alive. In the early hours of July 28, the miners were brought safely to the surface, one by one, in what can only be described as a feel-good moment for a community and a country still recovering from the atrocities of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks just 10 months earlier.
In addition to the sporting clays tournament, a free community celebration day will be held July 29 at the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site, Somerset. Beginning at 3 p.m., the public is encouraged to visit the site to celebrate and learn about the “9 For 9” rescue while enjoying musical performances, a car cruise, children’s activities, food vendors, fireworks and more.
