These immensely talented artists combine their knowledge of history with exceptional artistic and technical skill to produce meticulously detailed, well-researched compositions that not only delight the eye and capture the imagination, but are wonderfully narrative and serve as historically and socially significant records of a fascinating period in time. We not only see the world of the Eastern Woodland Indian and Colonel George Washington, but walk through the forests with them. It is a magical exhibition that brings history to life. |

The story of a shared past and future forged from steel, as seen through the eyes of both national and regional artists. These images express the immense energy, power, wonder and force of the vast industrial complex that took shape in the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth-century, a time when Pittsburgh became the nation's foremost center of iron making and mass-produced steel. The collection also includes works by contemporary artists that represent remnants of the steel city. Together, they form a lasting record of the artistic and historic legacy of southwestern Pennsylvania region.

Organized by The Westmoreland, this exhibition will reconstruct a sampling of the exhibitions of the same title organized by the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh (now Carnegie Museum of Art) from the 1943 to 1949 and will include 45 – 50 of the actual works that were selected for exhibitions over the seven year period. These annual exhibitions of American painting replaced the Institute’s annual Carnegie International while it was suspended during World War II.

Step back in time to New York in the 1940s. At the time, the city was a haven for eccentric characters struggling to make their mark. One New York socialite and aspiring opera singer, Florence Foster Jenkins, became an immensely popular musical performer through the sheer strength of her personality, the devoted support of her adoring friends, and the unabashed self-confidence about the beauty of her stupendously horrendous singing voice. The play follows Foster-Jenkins from charity recitals and extravagant balls all the way to Carnegie Hall.

Intimate Landscapes: The Gouache Paintings of Thomas Paquette
Westmoreland Museum of American Art
221 N. Main St.
Greensburg, PA 15601 Telephone: 724-837-1500
Website: www.wmuseumaa.org

These diminutive gouache landscape paintings (measuring approximately 2 x 4 inches) represent a beginning for Paquette, who often re-translates them into larger oil paintings. And sometimes they stand on their own. In either case, they offer intimate views of landscape throughout the United States. These “conversations” with nature, painted on site, en plein air, and re-worked in the studio, provide the sensation of the artist’s hand moving on the paper, capturing a moment in time combined with the essence of light and shadow on the natural world. According to the artist: “By reducing the scale to a couple of square inches…the most salient…movements are expressed, capturing a composition’s soul.” While small in size, they are monumental in scale.

This exhibition is comprised of over thirty works of art on loan from the collection of the Rhineland Industrail Museum, Oberhausen, Germany. Thirty of these paintings, works on paper, and photographs were shown along side the Westmoreland's traveling exhibition, Born of Fire: The Valley of Work, when it was hosted by that museum in 2006. Bringing this collection to our museum allows our audience the rare opportunity to view works of art made by artists of the Ruhr River Valley of Germany where the concentrated industrial environment paralleled that of Pittsburgh's indutrial corridor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The exhibition allows for comparisons of style and subject matter between American and German artists as well as contrasting their differences in approach to that subject matter. |

Thomas Paquette originally intended his little “color notes” as quick, throwaway color sketches for larger oil paintings, but they developed into paintings in their own right. In the words of the artist: “Simply put, they are the soul of a place, caught on paper.” with a Masters in Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University, Tom Paquette’s paintings have been the focus of more than thirty one-man exhibitions in galleries such as the Erie Art Museum, Georgia Museum of Art, and Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts. |
